The latest report from the energy research institute Montel Analysis points out that the main reason for the frequent occurrence of negative electricity prices in Europe is the continuous growth of solar power generation.

The institute's summary report on the European electricity market in the second quarter of 2025 indicates that the number of negative electricity price periods in almost all European countries has significantly increased this year, and this trend is expected to continue in the future.

Montel Analysis director Jean-Paul Harreman predicts that the duration of negative electricity prices in some parts of Europe will reach a historic high in the third quarter of 2025. He attributes this to "the continuous expansion of renewable energy, but the basic electricity demand has not grown synchronously... Prices in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium could sharply drop to negative values in the afternoon, and then rise significantly in the evening after fossil fuel power plants start up."
